My husband and I eagerly awaited this show and we were not let down. Yes by far Robin Williams steals every scene but that is to be expected, its Robin Williams and that is why we are watching it.
Unexpectedly hilarious
Before watching the pilot episode, I really didn't know what to think about Robin Williams in a sitcom. But David E. Kelly was able to strike a perfect balance! I thought the pilot was smart and quirky and I found myself laughing REALLY loud! I hope this series continues on for some time, like Boston Legal!
an unusual pairing--williams and kelly
there is something highly unusual going on in television. writers have clout. the names are becoming long on this list, vince gilligan, david chase, matthew weiner, etc., david kelly, another writer in this group, said there was only one possibility for this show and that was robin williams. this is because although there is a script, there are multiple takes of all scenes. in one, robin williams gives the line as written by kelly and cohorts. in others, he is allowed to riff like he did in GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM. the whole thing is edited later using the scenes which worked best. it comes as no huge surprise to kelly that more often than not, the scene where williams lets loose is the one kept. the whole show is robin williams and loosely hung around him is a cast who works with him in his own advertising agency. this includes his daughter played by sarah gellar.
