Spark: A Burning Man Story

Ahhhh, almost like being there
The movie was just released on 8/16/13, just in time for those of us who could not attend the 2013 Burn. I woke in the wee hours of the morning, homesick for the playa and the Burn happening just a few hundred miles away as I type. I watched the entire movie and never went back to sleep, now feeling that oh-so-familiar, sleep deprived state that I will carry into the workday as one more reminder of what I am missing on the playa right now.

Now, if the film makers could just make the following additions the documentary would be perfect: Smellovision for the bacon sizzling in the morning, wafting out of some nearby camp and into your nostrils as you awake fuzzy headed from a neon bright night of fun. Heatovision for the noonday sun that turns tents/RVs into hot houses and unprotected skin into red inflamed cells. Windovision for the convectively heated air mass that sweeps over the playa each afternoon and night, creating white outs and sometimes near hurricane force...

Great film, I loved it! Wow! Very highly recommended.
I've always been curious about Burning Man. Watching SPARK was like being there -- the bacchanalian revelry, colorful people, brilliant costumes and incredibly designed 100' high buildings, giant statues -- moving parts of this week long party with soul in the outer reaches of the Nevada desert.

Multiple camera crews on the ground and in the air capture Burning Man by night and day. We see one scene of eerie, surreal beauty after another, and the original music is awesome. This film captures the true spirit of Burning Man -- you are there.

There are plenty of laughs as well. Spark follows two ordinary people, young artists who became extraordinary when they took the step of committing themselves to contributing major art pieces to Burning Man.

The film includes footage of the first Burning Man on a San Francisco beach in the 1980's, shows a Board meeting in crisis mode in 2012, and follows the construction of Burning Man in 2012 on the 'Playa', before...

Fantastic!!
I've always been really curious about what goes on during Burning Man and before this documentary I really didn't know anything about the event. This movie opened my eyes to all of the mind blowing things that go on in Black Rock City during this short time period. I am really glad that I watched this movie, I might even try to go to Burning Man in the future!

Bury Me in Niagara

good for GWD fans
Bury Me in Niagra AKA in the USA as Ghost Mom has two notable actors-- Jean Stapleton and Geraint Wyn Davies ( Nick Knight of "Forever Knight"). GWD's characer is a doctor who has an intrusive mother ( Stapleton). When she dies she holds a "lucky pebble", ( a disguised mystical ruby) and her ghost insists that her body be buried in Niagra. Road trip via ice cream truck, pursued by Chinese gangsters who want the ruby, the son finally meets his father. GWD hams it up in various scenes and while the movie lacks some credibility at times, it is a comedy in the same vein as the Hope and Cosby road trip movies. Being a GWD fan I liked to see him in a comedic role as Nick Knight was mainly too angsty.

Not just for GWD fans!
OK -- I admit that I originally only bought this video because I wanted to see Geriant Wyn Davies in something other than Forever Knight.

After watching the video, however, I can definitely recommend this to just about anyone. The movie is light-hearted fun. Jean Stapleton is perfect as the mother who doesn't know when to let go.

The alternate title of "Ghost Mom" would make more sense than the "Bury Me in Niagara" title does. Regardless of what it is called, watch the movie and enjoy yourself for 1

Baby Sellers

A Provocative Lifetime Original: A Solid Storyline Needed More Time To Develop Sufficiently
I'm legitimately torn between 4 stars and 3 stars in my rating for the Lifetime network original movie "Baby Sellers." On the plus side, the film is quite a bit more ambitious than the channel's typical fare. With an intriguing topic, an interesting international cast, and a solid change-of-pace role for Kirstie Alley, there was much to admire in this well-meaning thriller. On the flip side, however, the screenplay takes a difficult subject matter and boils it down into its simplest elements. In "Baby Sellers," one stalwart agent from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) must single handedly lead multiple investigations, repeatedly go undercover, and ultimately take down various human trafficking organizations within the United States, India, Mexico, and Brazil. Let's just say that she is one busy lady! But when played with fiery determination by Jennifer Finnigan, you almost want to believe such a thing were possible! i found Kristy Alley's performance rather flat. Very disappointing. I wont watch it again. The storyline is okay but doesn't wrap neatly.

Awful, truly awful
My god was this a bad movie. The whole time I watched it I kept waiting for something to happen...but it never did. Go ahead and watch this movie if you feel like spending an hour and a half watching a girl stare blankly into space while she hears two British guys talk in her head. There is no "slow descent into madness" like other reviewers have said. She's normal the first night, then suddenly starts hearing voices. Huge waste of time. I couldn't wait for the end.

Time waster...big time
This movie does not live up to the previous review or reviews that I have read on other sites. I suspect that the positive reviews were written by either relatives of the actors or the actors themselves. This was a difficult movie to follow and understand. It got better toward the end, but not good enough to justify the time wasted viewing this with some family members. Leaving two young females in a cabin in a practically deserted woods is unrealistic. Poor acting--very amateurish and stiff delivery of lines by the actresses. The camp "scary laughter", voices being heard by Sarah and her reaction to the voices are humerous. The waste of food ( a beautiful piece of red meat served raw) was also disgusting. The direction and camera work were also distractions. The wide and long camera shots indicate that the characters are being "watched" when in fact there are only 2 stationary cameras inside the house and possibly one camera that follows the characters. There outgh to be a law....
If you make really bad movies, you have to pay people who watch it and waste their time. I fell asleep during the first 30 minutes and finally just shut it off! If watching someone walk aimlessly around their home is your idea of movie fun, then hit the popcorn popper grab a soda and enjoy. For the rest, forgettabout it!!

Interesting Premise. Worth A Watch

Imagine being able to light a candle at a church under a statue of a saint and lose a pound while eating whatever you want? Light 5, lose 5. This is actually what happens in St. Roz starring Rachel Wilson who plays Judy.

When a mysterious statue shows up outside a suffering church, the church suddenly finds itself with more money than a loan shark and undergarment decorations.

Judy is the daughter of the weight loss Queen, Minnie Barr who has helped thousands lose weight. Minnie's goal is to get her daughter the only one she can't seem to help lose weight, quickly married. At her comfortable size 12, (I swear that is all she can possibly be) no man will ever love her. Minnie quickly hires a dashing young man to romance Judy just as Judy finds the statue. She places her money in the box, gets home and finds that wah-la, she has lost 5 pounds and as long as she pays the church and prays, her weight continues to fall off.

An Uneven, But Amusing, Indie Comedy That Had the Potential To Be A True Cult Classic
It's not surprising that the new indie "Rock Jocks" employs a cast that has a familiar and extensive online presence. In many ways, it feels like an extended web series as opposed to a full fledged feature film. I don't mean this as a huge criticism, it's just that this movie obviously has a tiny budget and seems to have been made on the fly. The entire scenario takes place over the course of about twelve hours and is largely confined to one set. The smartest thing that the movie does is to acknowledge its own inexpensiveness. In a funny bit of introduction to the facility, an antiquated instructional video tells the viewer that the station is populated with state of the art equipment from the 1960s. And it looks every bit that advanced! The facility in question is a top secret Department of Defense project called AMI or the Asteroid Management Initiative. On one overnight shift, the misfits that man the AMI face all the usual workplace issues: boredom, staff conflict,...

Yes, Lasers go *pew* *pew* in space.
Take a small group of people, that don't like each other or their job, stick them in a small top secret bunker, make them sleep deprived, and expect them to save the world...all day and everyday. Laughed out loud too many times to count. A great situational character driven comedy with excellent performances by the cast. Had me drawing parallels between the characters in the movie and the people I have/do work with.

Like "Office Space" in the Military Industrial Complex
"Rock Jocks" is a hilarious and knowing send up of a work environment where the conflicts and duties of a strange high tech project that combines a corporate, government/regulated milieu with area 51 myth inspired, whacked out, 21st century, diverse, recovering, stressed out work force. Think of "Office Space", "Buckaroo Bonzai", and even Monty Python rolled together. Very imaginative and a lot of fun!

Snowbeast

A GREAT DEAL IS LEFT TO THE IMAGINATION -- PERHAPS TOO MUCH FOR MANY VIEWERS
FIRST THOUGHTS: WITH GORE DOMINATING THE HORROR GENRE IT'S NICE TO SEE THE IMAGINATION CALLED UPON AGAIN

For me it is sad to see that most people found 'Snowbeast' to be boring and trivial. I say this because I have enjoyed watching this admittedly tame TV creature-feature with my daughter for the past 15 years. I introduced it to her on Video, having recalled seeing it as a TV movie when it was first released in 1977.

Yes, 'Snowbeast' promises more than it delivers, but I was able to feel OK when allowing my youngsters to watch this rather tame creature-feature which kept their interest without giving them nightmares.

Not bad at all!
I don't get all of the negative reviews. This is a good horror movie. The acting is really good, the snowbeast scared the crap out of me, and the whole movie is just done well. No, this is not as good as Hammer Film's The Abominable Snowman, but it still is a good Yeti flick. Check it out, if you like Yeti movies, I think you will like this.

"Tonight on the C.B.S. late-night movie"
If you grew up in the 70's like me you remember that phrase well. In a time before cable and V.C.R.'s, us old timers had to watch what came on and even had to go to the T.V. to change the channel(unless you could afford the high priced remote T.V.'s of the day). Every Friday night children like myself were treated to an episode of "The Night Stalker" (The best show ever to me at the age of 11) and at least one or two horror movies. "Snowbeast" was one of about five movies that showed up regularly on those long ago nights("Shock waves, "The Devil's Rain", "Race With The Devil" ,and "Terror At 37,000 Feet" rounded out the others) and at least every three to four months one would play.

The story, about a Bigfoot like snow monster was played as "Jaws" in the snow. At the age of 11 this movie was silly,but very cool and even scary at times. With fond memories I bought this one and sat down to get lost in it again one Friday night. Well I'm not 11 anymore and most of the scares...

The Company You Keep

Better title: "The Price You Pay"
The criticism of this movie was originally started by the press's talking heads, with them only knowing the movie's topic and Redford's politics.

I am conservative who is organically suspicious of the press and it's motives, regardless of the side they come down upon. So I went to see it anyways, mostly because I wanted to see a particular actor's performance. I AM CONVINCED THE PRESS MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE MOVIE.

This film does not glorify terrorism. Quite the opposite. It shows how a person can cross the line from being an "activist" to being a felon/terrorist. It is sort of a retrospective of an activist's two lives - one he had to abandon once he crossed the line, the other, the second life he had to build afterward. In both cases, the focus of this movie is more on the private price he inadvertently pushed off on loved ones to avoid paying his public price for his acts.

The reader must understand that Sloan was guilty of some felony...

Fantastic
The DVD is not yet available, but I saw the international screening of this movie in Venice back in September 2012. I did not get into the premier (I'm not a star or VIP), just a guy who loves to travel and wanted to see Jackie Evancho in her first major movie. I was able to get a ticket to the public screening. The movie will probably appeal to many, but mainly to the 60s generation and Jackie's fans. It is a well done portrayal of someone who did some bad things while protesting, went into hiding, changed his name and now his past has caught up to him. Jackie plays his daughter whom he will lose if he gets caught and blamed for a killing. He sends her to his brother's and then proceeds to try to find those from his past that might be able to help him. Jackie has about 12-15 minutes of on screen time in about 10 scenes. She, Robert and Shia are the only actors who are in scenes from the beginning of the movie until the very end. She does a wonderful and very believable job...

THE OVER THE HILL GANG
Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon) turns herself into the FBI. She was a long time Weatherman (SDS) fugitive that was involved in bank robbery decades ago where a person was killed. This sets off a chain of events that ripples through the other fugitives of the group, particularly NY attorney Jim Grant (Robert Redford) who for some reason never made it to Putney. Jim has a daughter (kudos to Jackie Evancho) and goes on the lam. He becomes the attention of a national man hunt and is also pursued by Albany reporter Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf) who broke the story. Ben discovers that this saga has layers.

The characters are not only well developed, but they evolve within the film. There is a slightly layered mystery. We get clues about each layer prior to it being revealed. The film utilizes the 60's movement as background with the expected speeches, but also looks at the human side of things which are not as black and white. Mildly heart warming too.

MY KITCHEN IS MY TEMPLE
Love me, love my food, a simple rule for life. Amy (Heather Graham) lives in a delusional world where she has her own TV cooking show which openly equates food with sex. Her boyfriend Fred (Kevin Dillon) doesn't share in her compulsion and makes the mistake of openly loving his rare African parrot more than her food. The police (Joe Mantegna) is investigating the disappearance of the neighbor Saffron (Carrie-Anne Moss). Amy claims she knows Saffron, but clearly what she relates to the police is not the reality. Saffron is an actress who has fallen on hard times. Amy cooks for her not realizing Saffron is a closet bulimic, well not actually a bulimic in that she doesn't binge eat.

The film has great scenes of Heather's cleavage, cooking food and relating it to sex, eat your heart out Rachel Ray. Outside of that, the plot displayed weakness. You have a basic idea where the story is going to lead, just unsure how it gets there. Good character portrayals, unfortunately the...

Long Story Short: A young woman (Heather Graham) with an extreme passion for food is suspected to be involved with the disappearing of her neighbor (Carrie-Anne Moss). While she is preparing a meal for the investigating officer she is reminiscing, and the truth slowly gets revealed.

Review: It saddens me to see Heather Graham in all these weird B-movies, but I guess once you did one, you are stuck in this genre forever. The movie starts very appealing by showing many different food shots and colors and Heather Graham in many different Stepford -wife -like outfits, and the story seems interesting, too. But after about 30 minutes it starts getting a little boring, there doesn't seem to be any character development, and I honestly don't remember the dialogues, because they have been so meaningless. It seems like Egidio Coccimiglio had a good idea but didn't know how to...

A One Trick Pony
If you own the books of Brett Easton Ellis, you'll find this total rehash. His characters' mind numbing gluttony of high fashion is cut and pasted to fine cuisine. There is also a fetish for nonsexual elements like Cronenberg explored and an ambition for a wide audience and a celebrity friendship like Scorsese's "King of Comedy." The performance itself is like a poor man's Nicole Kidman.

Sexecution

A Fun Independent Horror Flick
The actors do a great job in creating fun characters that are loose and irreverent. In particular the character of Erica drives the film playing a relentless unapologetic bad-girl. It's refreshing to see a female lead and one that gets the best lines. This isn't a film with buckets of blood, there are some gruesome scenes, but most of the film deals with the characters haplessly trying to get out of the dangerous situation they find themselves in. Highly recommended if you enjoy an indie dark comedy.

Paul the Apostle

in name only
Despite crediting a long list of Biblical experts, this made for television film is astonishingly inaccurate, but is still perhaps worth a rental; just don't expect to know much about the Apostle Paul from it, other than some rudimentary facts like his persecution of the early Christians before he was blinded by the light, and became a believer in Jesus.

It has a fabulously attractive cast, and all do an admirable job in the acting department. The main characters are Saul/Paul (Johannes Brandrup), Reuben (Thomas Lockyer), and Barnabas (G.W. Bailey).

Directed by Roger Young, whose other religious TV film from 1999, "Jesus", I found really ghastly and blasphemous, in "Paul, the Apostle" the acting and writing are far superior, and it is not offensive in its treatment of the Lord.

Shot on location in Quarzazate, Morocco and Malta, the cinematography by Giovanni Galasso is excellent, and it has a lovely score by Carlo Siliotto. The interiors and costumes...

not like the Bible Collection in accuracy at all!
this video is nothing more than artistic license with the Scriptures. My family was amazed at how many points we found in the Scriptures that were DIFFERENT than what was said or acted out in this film. We REALLY enjoy other parts of the Bible Collection films, such as Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jeremiah, and Esther. BUT THIS ONE doesn't deserve to be named off with the B.C. set (nor the Sampson one). If you want to see some common yet erroneous doctrines presented, then this film won't bother you. The only part that was continously Biblical was the tension between the political religious parties. All else was corrupted and shoved together incorrectly. Finally, the "artistic license" taken where you see Saul/Paul go from being a wrestler, to the full naked backside of the characters, to a single nude breast of a woman later as her and hubby go to consumate, and the buttocks hanging out of a few others along the way....well, it was embarassing to see such...

Disappointing
I had high hopes for this film, but was soon disappointed. First, I think it's important to know that THIS IS NOT A FAMILY FILM. There are three scenes with gratuitous nudity (derrieres, breasts, etc) and sexual content (a sex scene and a nearly nude Nubian dancer). What kind of content is that to put into a religiously themed film?

Second, I had many difficulties with the "artistic license" used by the screen writer(s). Much of this film's contents is not in the Bible at all, much less mentioned in the extra-Biblical knowledge we have about Paul. Needless to say, this film should NOT be used as a teaching aide any more than the film "Pearl Harbor."

Third, the truly dramatic moments in Paul's life were handled very poorly. For example, the scene on the Road to Damascus could have been awsome -- if the movie had a better screen writer/director/actor ... and on and on and on. Instead, the writers and director seemed more interested in adding things folks who...

Three Short Films

Amazing Collection of Shorts
I must say that I was pretty excited to receive my copy of this collection of short films, especially Paper People. All three films were brilliantly done and very entertaining to watch. I hadn't heard of the other two short films, but I was blown away by the last film, You Don't Know Bertha Constantine. It was beautifully shot and the story was so touching and moving it brought me to tears. Bravo guys!

A short film must have!
This is a great collection of shorts with well written characters and riveting plot lines.
Wunderland is a glimpse of a moment at the front lines of WWII.
You Don't Know Bertha Constantine reflects devotion in the worst kind of adversity. I could relate strongly to Bertha's courage, determination, and loyalty.
Paper People, which has received a great deal of accolades at short film festivals, is intense and intriguing with an ending not to be missed.
The directing and writing team of Andrew Kightlinger and Luke Schuetzle are truly dynamic and I look forward to future productions from this duo.

A Must Have Collection
I have seen all three of these shorts by the Schuetzle Prodcution Company. Each one is well crafted. "Paper People" is a well written story with solid performances by the cast. It is well directed and the post production work is top quality. This short has swept the film festival circuit. "Wunderland" is a tense WWII battle scene. It was shot as a pilot for a web series. It was very well done. "You Don't Know Bertha Constantine", is a well written and performed story of a grieving widow struggling to honor her loved one's life. This award winning script transitioned to the silver screen nicely. The collection is a must have, if you like short films.

Olympus Has Fallen [HD]

When this comes out in DVD, I will be purchasing.
I wasn't really sure what to expect when I went to this movie. The decent action flicks of yesterday have been replaced by superheroes shooting space aliens or super gory, gross movies that are so hardcore they turn me off before I ever get past the trailer. But this movie takes you back to the really cool action thrillers of yesteryear and frankly, I was riveted throughout.

The action is non stop and the acting is superb, especially for this type of movie. I had never seen Gerard Butler in a movie before but from now on, he is on my watch list. His portrayal of Mike Banning is gritty and down to earth, never over the top. Aaron Eckhart does a very good job with the rather thankless role of the Hostage In Chief. He, too, never stoops to caricature; just a man faced with a horrifying situation. Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett are solid and realistic as the Speaker of the House and the Director of the Secret Service. Rick Yune is a absolute chiller of a villain...

Olympus Has Fallen Review
Best action movie of the year.
Even though the White House is a very unlikely site for the plot, it is not an unlikely story in view of the latest and older
developments in the recent history of the US.
Edge of your seat action, does not let off for a single minute. You will definitely never get bored.

Exciting, Edge of Your Seat (with some flaws)
This movie is fantastic for these people:

- You like the film concept of a foreign government capturing the President inside the White House, with a single hero (as in Die Hard) who tries to save the day (and the world) - against all odds.

- You're looking for an exciting, heart pounding, non-stop action flick.

- You like movies with lots of explosions, surprises, and situations that look really impossible.

- You don't care if there are some things about this film that are a bit cliché. They can work in films. And you're just looking for some entertainment anyway.

- You're okay with a character theme that's been done before. There's some time taken to show you the woundedness of Gerard Butler's character, and some of what makes him tick. It's not a new theme. You've seen this before. But you're ok with that.

This movie is not for you if:

- You can't stand cliché's in movies.

Hatchet III: Rated R Version

A sequel that lives up to the original for once.
Let me first say that I love horror films. There have been more duds than successes in recent history, and to a fan of the genre, this fact is extremely disappointing. When I first heard about Hatchet in 2006, I became ecstatic. A film that would solely rely on practical effects opposed to CGI? This seemed like a dream come true, considering that recent films that had the potential to be logged into my all-time favorites list were ruined by computer generated effects (I.e. The Midnight Meat Train). Needless to say, Hatchet blew my mind. The humor was right on point, the acting was grade A, and the gore was both realistic and gut-wrenching. Also, the constant throwbacks to old-school horror films and guest appearances from vintage horror movie actors made a beaming smile spread across my face.
Then Hatchet II came along. The bar was set very high, because I expected a lot from Adam Green and the rest of the cast. Now, don't get me wrong; the movie wasn't terrible. The appearances...

This is an awesome continuation of the first two! Victor Crowley is nasty and brutal as ever! Most sequels tend to lack & by the 3rd, well, not good. This will not let you down!

Great for Hatchet fans
I can't really give a fair review of this because I love the Hatchet series so much. This is a perfect end to the series but I wouldn't mind seeing a fourth one.

I am a huge fan of Danielle Harris so watching her in any role is always a thrill for me. I also loved seeing Caroline Williams, I loved her in "Texas Chainsaw 2" and it was great to see her back in another campy horror film.

If you loved Hatchet and Hatchet 2 then you are gonna love this.

These movies aren't for everyone. My only regret is that I watched this online instead of in a theater. These seems like the type of movie that would be fun to watch in a theater with a bunch of other people.

Also Rileah Vanderbilt must be the most beautiful woman who has ever lived. She needs to be in more movies.

Wrath Of Gods

The Burden of Sturla's Dream!
Many MANY years ago, being a dedicated Werner Herzog fan, I went to see the documentary, "Burden of Dreams" which was based on the many trials and tribulations of filming his incredible movie, "Fitzcarraldo" in the jungles of Peru. "Wrath of Gods" could be its Icelandic cousin. There seem to be certain films that fight against their creators. Their directors, crew, and cast must give all they have, and sometimes even a bit more, in order to see their dream realized. Indeed, there are moments during WOGs when the forced smile on director Sturla Gunnarsson's face melts into something sad and desperate; those are among the most beautiful moments in this film, because that sadness and desperation added to the haunting (and I mean that in the most lovely and primal way) beauty of what became "Beowulf & Grendel". Outstanding interview with Gerry!
I can't believe what I'm seeing...a solid hour interview with Gerry Butler AFTER a grueling workday on the set. I'm amazed at his patience under the visible stress of an aching head and body after braving the Icelandic weather to shoot this revealing documentation. How much more can he do to show his appreciation for the support of his fans worldwide? His behavior speaks volumes about the depth of his character and his commitment to excellence and dedication as an actor. His star is definitely rising and he is indeed 'paying his dues'...he is not afraid to shoulder the tough roles, transforming himself into a character in ways that startle directors and producers alike. When he signs on to play a role they can be assured of this: they will get much, much more than their money's worth from the likes of this humble, towering Scotsman who has his feet planted solidly on the ground and who has restored the grandeur of moviemaking. Don't look for his handsome face in the gossip rags...

Better than Beowulf! Mother Nature at Her Wildest!
I liked Beowulf the film in spite of the unpolished, anachronistic script, because of the gorgeous scenery, excellent costume and set work, and good performances by the title characters. For me the best part was Iceland itself; its vistas and its unbelievable weather, and this is where Wrath of the Gods surpasses the film by far. I think it gives insight into formation of the culture when people struggle to survive in such a place. Highly recommended for anyone interested in filmmaking.

Screen Test

Suprisingly Enjoyable Movie
I rented this movie for a cheap thrill and a couple of chuckles, and ended up viewing a surprisingly entertaining and downright funny movie. Sort of an early American Pie, this movie follows four boys in their quest to get laid. This is where the paths of the two movies divirge, however, the boys unite under the idea of holding auditions for a phony porno flick. This is where the movie really starts to get funny. Be forewarned, however, that this movie is not really intelectual humor, but if you are a fan of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, or any other comedians of this type, you should definately give this movie a try.
