Free Angela & All Political Prisoners

Judging History and Angela Davis

Judging History and Angela Davis
A review of Free Angela.

When I was younger, in the eighties, one of the greatest compliments (or insults, depending on who said it) was to be told you had an "Angela Davis" afro. The hairstyle then, didn't resonate the same meaning as it did in the late sixties and seventies, when, in those days, it called forth a number of responses from people the world over. To the mainstream establishment in the United States, Angela Davis, crowned with the fullest of afros, was the embodiment of terrorism and the specter of overthrow. To the kids that I grew up with, in a middle-class, black neighborhood on Long Island, New York, she represented an era that we'd heard about, but, perhaps, didn't understand very well. We did know, however, that most of our parents considered her a hero, while most of our teachers didn't. Free...

A Must See For Anyone Interested in the Past, Present, and Future of Racial Justice and Equity in this Nation
Moving, powerful, - I would have loved to see this movie be hours and hours long to just listen to the amazing words and right-on in-depth critical analysis of Angela Davis, - AMAZING! Brilliant. And the times are not that far away from us, - we have THE SAME forces at work today, - the same forces that limit and restrict ALL peoples freedoms, especially if you are not the valued cherished privileged inheritor of the status quo - aka, white, rich/middle class, male, - and reading Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow will tell you that the problems with our prison system have not gone away, - and that racism has not disappeared since the 60s. As a white, lesbian female pursing a career in academia, I can attest to the climate that attacks, snubs, hinders, and often, chains, those who want to teach the real story of our nation - stories like Angela Davis' and the Black Panther Party and the struggle for equity and justice!

Free Angela & All Political Prisoners
As a minority, Angela Davis has played a big role in our lives. Her non-stop will to fight is admired by all. Great documentary!

Rapture-Palooza

WHO'S YOUR BEAST?
This story centers around Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) who has caught the eye of the portly foul-mouthed Anti-Christ (Craig Robinson) who prefers to be called "The Beast." Her complaining mother has returned from heaven, having been kicked out of the rapture.

The idea was clever, especially how man learns to calmly deal with the various plagues thrown his way. I enjoyed the Maddow joke as well as the "fowl-mouthed" crows. The humor was spotty. The jokes were rather lame and juvenile. The writers came up with a half decent plot but couldn't execute on dialouge, which made the actors look bad. It has the stupidity and language of a teen sex comedy that misses the mark.

Might make it as a low brow rental.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity. Sex talk.

For people looking to be comically entertained not enlightened
Okay, I can tell from different comical reviews of other films and works that someone is gonna get mad about the plot or the inappropriate jokes. I am here to say if you are looking to get enlightened or find some sort deep meaning behind this film; go back now.

Anyway, I thought this movie was hilarious! I like it when comedic movies own up to their "R" rating. (I'm weird. I know.) It was funny, but also visually stunning and I thought that was great. Also, I have to give props to the music department for the music choice. It most definitely didn't hurt that it had a few comedic actors in the film as well. I think every actor/actress as well as the team for this film did a great job. I would put more of a review here, but I don't like telling people about spoilers, sorry.

Snooze Palooza
There are exactly two laughs in this movie and both of them are talking crows. Danny McBride should have played the beast/antichrist. He could ad lib funnier lines all day every day. Craig Robinson can be funny, but here he's trying way too hard, as if he knows he's stuck in a straight jacket forces him to hit the same note and wasn't given time or freedom to expand the role.
